A Colorful Branding Session on 35mm Film | Rat’s Nest Hair

I was so honored to be asked to photograph this colorful branding session on 35mm film.

When Carissa of Rat’s Nest Hair in Worcester reached out and asked me to do a brand session with her, I was so excited. Carissa and the team over at Rat’s Nest are all amazingly talented stylists, and I knew whatever she came up with conceptually would be magical. I adore all of her work, and her vision for the shoot resonated with me so much. She was even really excited for me to shoot the majority of the photos on 35mm film (my favorite)!

We shot this session in a small studio with a simple setup, but I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Carissa is a fan of experimental imagery, so I used things like multiple exposures and gelled flashes to add an otherworldly quality to the portraits while still showcasing Carissa’s amazing skills. I also loved being able to collaborate with not just one but two amazing artists during this shoot. Everyone had different ideas and it was so much fun trying new things.  This is one of the reasons I absolutely love branding sessions. They always feel like a collaboration to me. I absolutely love working with fellow artists and entrepreneur to bring their brands and vision to life. And seeing my photography on their websites and social media always makes me smile.

Carissa’s long time client Mags Munroe was the model for the shoot. Mags is a talented artist who focuses on self portraiture and she was so good in front of the camera. Carissa styled Mags with a textured shag haircut with neon green pieces. She kept the makeup and wardrobe simple and minimal except for the 3D teardrops she created on Mags’ face. The sparkly teardrops photographed so beautifully, especially when we were using flash.

loved the digital images, but when I got the film scans back I was even more thrilled. The way the colors in the session rendered on film was really magical.  I both love and hate waiting for film scans because I am super impatient but when I finally get the gallery it’s exciting.

And now enough of me talking! Here are some of my favorite images.
