Jess and I shot Cat and Jonathan’s Vermont wedding in 2021, and it was magical. So when they contacted us about photographing their second wedding in Ireland, we were so excited. Jonathan’s family is from Ireland, and many of them had not been able to attend the first wedding because of Covid, so they decided to have a second wedding to celebrate with everyone. The couple chose Kilkea Castle for their venue, and we had to catch our breath when we pulled up for the first time. The castle dates from the 12th century and retains many of its original features, so it truly felt like stepping into a fairytale.
The castle is surrounded by acres of green countryside, a river, and a gorgeous courtyard. Since it was June, the courtyard was brimming with flowers and it made the perfect backdrop for Cat and Jonathan’s ceremony. The ceremony was officiated by a family member, and it was so personal and touching. At various points, Cat and Jonathan’s families were called up to the altar to participate, and the couple capped off the ceremony with a traditional Irish handfasting.
It had been threatening to rain all that day, but luckily the rain held off for the ceremony and cocktail hour so guests could enjoy the gardens. But the sky opened up just in time for everyone to go to the reception hall. At the reception, many guests spoke and toasted the couple. One relative sang Cat and Jonathan a song! After dinner, there was a traditional Irish band to kick off the dance party.
